Volunteer Activities

Below are brief descriptions of the various volunteer activities we have scheduled this season.

Snack Bar Server

The snack bar server assists with opening and closing, takes orders and payment from snack bar customers, serves food and drinks, re-stocks and refills as necessary, and ensures that the floor and work surfaces remain clean.  No experience is needed and no grills are used in the snack bar.

We divide these slots into "veteran" and "rookie" slots, and ask members with experience to take the "veteran" slots.  This is simply to ensure that at any time there is at least one person in the snack bar with some experience.

Please note that children are not permitted in the snack bar with parents.

Please try to show up a few minutes before your scheduled start time, to allow for a transition period before the person you are replacing leaves.  The activity sponsor is Maria Stenborg.

Field Setup

We need help to set the fields up on Saturday morning, both before the games start and late in the morning, as we need to reconfigure some of the fields to allow the younger players to play on the larger fields.  These are mostly physical activities, and among other things will involve helping to move goals, so you need to be physically capable of lifting. Please don't put yourself at risk to help with this.

Please meet the Board Member on Duty at the snack bar at the scheduled time, and be sure to sign the sign-in sheet in the snack bar.

Grounds Cleanup

Several grounds cleanup sessions will be scheduled each weekend.  This activity involves walking around the fields to collect any litter and place it in the trash cans, emptying trash cans as needed, checking the bathrooms, and any other cleanup needed.  In the final session of the day the trash cans must be brought back to the snack bar area, and the contents moved to the dumpster.

For the first couple of weekends we plan to try different times to see what works best, so this activity will be scheduled one week at a time.

Please meet the Board Member on Duty at the snack bar at the scheduled time, and be sure to sign the sign-in sheet in the snack bar.

Trophy Day Activities

Most of the activities on Trophy Day should be self explanatory from the brief description - please let Jem Treadwell know if you have questions.

Flyer Distribution

We distribute flyers advertising our registration dates to Howell's elementary and middle schools, for distribution to families. We don't distribute to schools outside Howell.

This activity involves:

You will be able to collect the flyers from the fields the weekend before the distribution date, and you can deliver them at any time on the date specified.  If you deliver them a day or so later that will be OK, as long as you let us know that you plan to do that.  The activity sponsor is Jem Treadwell.

Registration Desk

We hold registration sessions for next season at Trophy Day/Night and at a separate public walk-in session.  This activity involves checking registration forms and verifying date-of-birth and payment details. At summer sessions we'll also be taking registrations for Soccer Camp, and at fall sessions for our Indoor program.  The activity sponsor is Jem Treadwell.

Picture Night Helper

This is an opportunity for a mid-week activity. We just need a couple of people to help with organizing the teams to keep things flowing smoothly, and any other help that's needed.  The activity sponsor is Lynn Hoenig.

Mail-out

Help with folding, stapling and stamping newsletters and assignment information sheets.  This is usually done in about one hour if we have a full complement of helpers.  Mail-out sessions are usually held at Howell Library.

Pre-Season Grounds Preparation & Weekly Field Lining

Volunteers will be assigned for the following activities:
  • Field Lining crew: Lay out and paint field markings on our fields (F1-6, plus minor "internal" fields). This involves staking out the fields (using existing markers), running twine to form the outlines of the markings, and applying paint from aerosol cans using a field painting machine. At least 2 3-person crews are required.
  • Goal repair crew: Re-string and/or repair goal nets as required. Make sure nets are securely fastened to frames. At least 2 people required.
  • Field cleanup: Two (at most three) people to pick up trash and remove large tree branches from playing areas and clean up under bleachers and around the trailers and snack bar building.
  • Trailer cleanup: Two or three people to clean out and reorganize the food and equipment trailers.
  • Building maintenance: 3 people to clean and paint the bathrooms and snack bar area.
  • Snack bar setup: If needed, 2-3 people to assist Lon with restocking and setting up the snack bar.

Elks Shoot Supervisor & Helpers

The Elks Shoot is a fun activity, organized by the Howell Elks Club, in which players shoot a soccer ball into a modified goal.  They score points according to which area of the goal they hit.  After the local sessions high-scoring players move on to district and regional phases of the competition.

We need volunteers to help set up the goals and registration tables, to take registration forms, and to supervise the players waiting to shoot. At the end of the session we need help with tearing down the equipment.

The activity sponsor is Laurie Szyarto.
